Dear family, friends, and greater community,

As we grieve and begin the process of recovering from the destruction of our home, we are tremendously grateful for the love and support flowing our way. We are in awe. This website is the tool we will use to keep everyone informed of our day to day struggles, successes and needs. As time allows, we will respond personally to the bounty of emails and phone calls streaming in. Until then, please use this website to stay connected.

The Tragedy:
On Thursday February 11 our home caught fire sometime around 11:30am. No one was home- thankfully. The Riceville and Swannnaoa fire departments responded and worked hard to get the blaze under control. Our deepest thanks goes out to the men and women who put their lives on the line to save what they could of our home. Because of their efforts, our detached garage and little efficiency apartment were saved. But the home itself is a total loss.

The Aftermath:
We feel blessed that no one was hurt and that our children did not have to endure the trauma of fire escape. The four of us are going through waves of emotions; we cry, we laugh, we cry some more and we hug. Through this grieving process we are lifted by the love an support of all of you and the joy that four of us still have eachother.

We are currently living in a hotel and will soon move onto the Warren Wilson College campus- where Stan works- into a vacant staff house that the College is graciously allowing us to use. This house is a mile from our property and will serve as headquarters for our impending rebuilding effort.

What you can do:

Thank you all again for being there. We could not pull through without you. Currently, we have a few options for receiving your support that are linked from this site. All help is appreciated. We will set up a registry for specific items needed shortly. If you are one of the folks willing to donate furnishings, please stand by. We will the garage at the campus house unlocked so you can bring items there. We will post a map to the house here Monday morning.

Much love and thanks,
The Cross/Shannon Family

  1. Hey y'all - like many folks in the WWC community, I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of your loss, and really want to help however I can. Like many of the folk here at Wilson, my ability to help financially is limited... but my ability to do other, non-monetary things is pretty significant.

If there are goods or services that you need; be they a home-cooked meal, someone to watch the kids, any of a variety of items that are needed in a household, etc. - those are things that the folk of WWC, especially the students, are more able to give. Not that I don't want to give you lots of money - it's just something I don't have much of, and I know this is a feeling mirrored by a lot of the students here.

And if you need help with the plumbing... you know who to call!

  2. Beloved Tara & Stan,
We are all rallying for you here at Isis Cove, your priestess sisters are staging their potluck~givaway, and the larger priestess community is sending you donations and care packages from near and far...so if you get something from Timbucktu it just might be from a priestess! I won't call because I know you must be overwhelmed with all the small details, but Gary & I want you to know that we are sending you love and holding you and your family in a web of light, support and energy.
What an amazing opportunity to become masters
    in recieving, eh?

    Much love,
    Anyaa

  3. I lost everything to fire in 1980. You are indeed lucky and blessed no-one was hurt.
I'd like to suggest you join Freecycle and ask the moderator if you can post with regards to your particular tragedy.

  4. From Sophia's first grade teacher:
Horrified to hear of the fire. Thrilled that you are all OK. I'm sure your blessings in the days, weeks and months to come will outweigh your material losses...although I know the process will not be easy. Your are blessed that ECCS and WWC are truly supportive communities.
We have some little "extra" pieces of furniture; bookcase, antique chest, coffee table...yours in a moment's notice if you would like.
Our hearts go out to you,
    Liz

  5. Dear Stan and family,
Our campus ecology team at NWF has recently learned about the fire and the loss of your home. I am very sorry about all that you are going through. A member of our staff recently lost the family home and it is quite a process of transition and renewal. You give so much to your community and to the larger world. I hope the world will respond in kind. With love and best wishes,
    Julian

  6. Hi Tara and Stan
My heart is with you. As the sunset breeze comes by each day, remember the renewal it promises.
When you get around to the rebuilding, if that's an option, let me know how I can help. I'm back into my green architecture practice and would be happy to help you with any architectural and construction challenges. I always wanted a Phoenix on life list of birds!
